Today I started with the installation of my first real web server. Bought the server at http://www.buyaserver.be. It's a pentium 3.0 Ghz machine with RAID 1. Installed Apache and MySQL, other programs will follow.
I got the machine with Red Hat linux pre-installed, but they forgot to give me the root password, and since it was Sunday, I couldn't contact them. I reset the password by specifying "single" after the kernel boot command line, which allowed me to start without specifying a password. After that, i did "passwd" and the password was set to my choice.

The computer of my brothers girlfriend had problems. Tried to install the win xp harddrive of my parents (which contained some software I wanted to use) in her win me machine. It didn't work (probably fat32 vs ntfs). But when I reinstalled my parents harddrive into their computer, the disk wasn't detected anymore. After a lot of searching with recovery tools, it appears that the boot sector was changed. It was reported as a fat32 disk while the files where in ntfs format. I managed to get my parents data from their disk (with GetDataBack, a recovery tool), copied it to my laptop and reinstalled their operating system. One day lost because of this... But now we have again two healthy computers and one lesson learned (although I already knew this): don't ever, under any circumstance, use or try to repair Windows Millennium again!
Murphy's law kicked in a lot: in each machine, a cable became loose (ide and floppy), the date was incorrect which caused Windows Update to refuse to update and spyware on one of the machines which slowed the whole process down.

Found a cool Google hack today: enter http:// in Google and you see all sites of the web, ordered by popularity.

I have problems for almost two days now with Hibernate. I'm trying to map a java.util.Map with XDoclet, but instead of the id of my object that should be stored in the Map table, the complete serialized object is stored there.
After looking on Mail-Archive and Google, I haven't found anything. Now I'm trying the Hibernate Forums.
And yes, the solution was here, thanks to a post by Gavin King itself: the problem was that I was using @hibernate.collection-element instead of @hibernate.collection-one-to-many. Small but significant...
